About Susan’s Photography

Spending time outdoors was so natural as a child, it never occurred to realize how fortunate I was. As a young child hours were spent riding bikes, skiing (snow and water), climbing trees, walking, reading, hiking, swimming, or boating. It was not until about high school years when asking some of my girl friends to go roller skate, bike, swim, ski and they didn’t know how to do those things. I thought everyone knew how or did sports on a regular basis. That is when I started to realize how lucky to have those experiences. Through out my adult years, I have added a few additional sports to the earlier childhood ones. White water rafting, scuba diving, owning my own horse, sea kayaking and a ride in a hot air balloon are a few more to my list with the most recent…Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Boarding. My skills are beginner but I can stand…nothing dramatic as doing head stands or yoga…just grateful I can stand. There are still more experiences on my list waiting to be accomplished.

For about 20 years I volunteered as a child advocate being a voice for children. I saw more than I ever bargained for about abuse and learned about legislation, going to court, spending time on a team being educated and educating as well. At times it would be exhausting watching a child who was in trauma and trying to get the services at school, therapy appointments, court time, while struggling to keep life as normal despite the other school and sport activities.

While walking about taking photographs…I never cease to be amazed at the simple things. Often people will see me in my stance or crouching low to capture a moment in time. They may be out walking as well but often miss what is surrounding them. The reason I know this is they will sometimes ask what I am taking a picture of. Some won’t know there is a pond there, or notice the falcons soaring above or hear the chirp of a humming bird about to do a mating dance.

I can be sitting in a restaurant and notice the mirrors, glass of ice tea, light over the table, food, shimmering colors of wine glasses hanging from above or light shining through a window. If you hang out with me…you will know that I carry a small digital camera most often in my little backpack as I walk about and my cell phone. I have had the big camera lens but prefer a smaller camera as I can take it kayaking, horse back riding and often it is not even in my backpack but instead in my pocket or sweat shirt pouch. Using a small digital camera does have limitations as I can’t always zoom in to capture the falcon as it is too high up or the bald eagle too far off and it is just a speck on my camera.

My genre is birds, flowers, scenic landscapes, people, dogs, animals, food, tea, latte’s, trees, beach, boats, bridges…pretty much something for everyone. I hope you enjoy viewing my photographs.
